Limb Morphogenesis

Limb morphogenesis is the developmental process through which embryonic limb buds form, pattern, and grow into functional limbs, making it a central subject in developmental biology. It depends on coordinated signaling between the apical ectodermal ridge, which promotes outgrowth through fibroblast growth factors, and the zone of polarizing activity, which helps establish anterior-posterior patterning through Sonic hedgehog signaling; additional pathways regulate tissue differentiation and digit formation. Studying limb morphogenesis reveals how cells interpret positional information, coordinate proliferation and differentiation, and shape complex structures. These principles help explain congenital limb abnormalities and inform research on regeneration, tissue engineering, and developmental disorders.

Plant morphogenesis—the development of a plant’s form and structure—involves several overlapping developmental processes, including growth and cell differentiation. Precursor cells differentiate into specific cell types, which are organized into the tissues and organ systems that make up the functional plant. Plant growth and cell differentiation are under complex hormonal control. Plant hormones regulate gene expression, often in response to environmental stimuli. For example, many plants...
