Pronephros Development

Pronephros development is the earliest stage of vertebrate kidney formation, providing a transient embryonic excretory system and establishing the foundation for later renal development. It arises from intermediate mesoderm as pronephric tubules form and connect with the nephric duct, while associated glomeruli filter fluid into the developing tubular network. In mammals, the pronephros soon regresses and is replaced by the mesonephros, whereas it remains functional for a longer period in some vertebrates, including fish and amphibians. Studying this process clarifies nephrogenesis, tissue patterning, and the origins of congenital kidney abnormalities, while supporting research using developmental models and kidney organoids.

Laser Ablation of the Zebrafish Pronephros to Study Renal Epithelial Regeneration

2011

Acute kidney injury (AKI) in humans is a common clinical problem caused by damage to the epithelial cells that comprise kidney nephrons, and AKI is associated with high mortality rates of 50-70%1. Following epithelial cell destruction, nephrons have a limited ability to regenerate, though the mechanisms and limitations that guide this phenomenon remain poorly understood. In this video article, we describe our technique for targeted laser ablation of kidney nephron cells in the zebrafish...

2019

As the human population continues to grow and use resources, we must be mindful of our planet’s natural limits. Sustainable development provides a pathway to maintain and improve human life now while also ensuring that future generations will have the resources that they need. The long-term success of sustainability efforts rests on understanding the interplay between human actions and ecological systems. The oceans are one important focus of global conservation efforts. Overfishing,...

Development of the Chick

2023

The chicken embryo (Gallus gallus domesticus) provides an economical and accessible model for developmental biology research. Chicks develop rapidly and are amenable to genetic and physiological manipulations, allowing researchers to investigate developmental pathways down to the cell and molecular levels. This video review of chick development begins by describing the process of egg fertilization and formation within the chicken reproductive tract. Next, the most commonly used chick staging...
