Fluid Cell Imaging

Fluid cell imaging is a microscopy approach that visualizes materials or biological systems while they remain suspended in a liquid environment, enabling observation of processes that conventional vacuum-based imaging may disrupt. A sealed fluid cell confines the sample between thin, electron- or photon-transparent windows, while a microscope records structural or chemical changes through the cell under controlled conditions such as flow, pressure, or applied voltage. In engineering, this method supports real-time studies of nanoparticle growth, corrosion, electrochemical reactions, membrane behavior, and fluid-driven material changes. These observations help connect dynamic nanoscale mechanisms with the design and performance of advanced materials and devices.

2014

Drop impact of non-Newtonian fluids is a complex process since different physical parameters influence the dynamics over a very short time (less than one tenth of a millisecond). A fast imaging technique is introduced in order to characterize the impact behaviors of different non-Newtonian fluids.

Source: Sweeney, A. M., et al. In Vivo Imaging of Cerebrospinal Fluid Transport through the Intact Mouse Skull using Fluorescence Macroscopy. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the process of visualizing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow in a mouse brain using fluorescence imaging. A fluorescent tracer is injected into the cisterna magna (CM), allowing its movement with CSF to be tracked through the subarachnoid and perivascular spaces. Time-lapse imaging captures the tracer's journey,...

Position the head of a patient with multiple sclerosis inside the radiofrequency or RF coil of an MRI machine.Begin fluid-attenuated inversion recovery or FLAIR imaging. Select a brain slice containing lesions near CSF-rich areas. The system generates a strong magnetic field, aligning protons in healthy and lesioned brain tissue and CSF along its direction, creating net magnetization.Apply an inversion RF pulse to flip the magnetization of all protons, aligning them opposite to the magnetic...
