Nanoscale Kinetics

Nanoscale kinetics is the study of how quickly and through what pathways matter, energy, and chemical reactions change at dimensions of roughly 1–100 nanometers, where interfaces and molecular fluctuations strongly influence behavior. At this scale, high surface-to-volume ratios, short diffusion lengths, quantum or confinement effects, and stochastic collisions can alter rate constants and transport compared with bulk systems; researchers often quantify these changes using time-resolved spectroscopy, microscopy, and reaction-diffusion models. In engineering, nanoscale kinetics guides the design of catalysts, semiconductor devices, sensors, energy-storage materials, and nanomedicines by linking processing conditions and surface chemistry to performance, stability, and scale-up.

Isolating electrical and thermal effects on electrically assisted deformation (EAD) is very difficult using macroscopic samples. Metallic sample micro- and nanostructures together with a custom test procedure have been developed to evaluate the impact of applied current on the formation without joule heating and evolution of dislocations on these samples.

Kinetic Molecular Theory: Molecular Velocities, Temperature, and Kinetic Energy

2020

The kinetic molecular theory qualitatively explains the behaviors described by the various gas laws. The postulates of this theory may be applied in a more quantitative fashion to derive these individual laws. Collectively, the molecules in a sample of gas have average kinetic energy and average speed; but individually, they move at different speeds. Molecules frequently undergo elastic collisions in which the momentum is conserved. Since the colliding molecules are deflected off at different...

Enzyme Assays and Kinetics

2023

Enzyme kinetics describes the catalytic effects of enzymes, which are biomolecules that facilitate chemical reactions necessary for living organisms. Enzymes act on molecules, referred to as substrates, to form products. Enzyme kinetic parameters are determined via assays that directly or indirectly measure changes in substrate or product concentration over time. This video will cover the basic principles of enzyme kinetics (including rate equations) and kinetic models. The concepts governing...
