Particle Classification

Particle classification is the systematic grouping of solid particles according to properties such as size, density, shape, or settling behavior, enabling engineers to control material performance and process efficiency. In practice, classification separates particle populations by exploiting differences in motion through a fluid or across a surface, using methods such as screening, sedimentation, air classification, and cyclonic separation. These processes are essential in mineral processing, powder technology, chemical engineering, and environmental systems, where they support size control, contaminant removal, resource recovery, and consistent product quality. Accurate classification also improves equipment design and helps optimize energy use in large-scale particulate processes.

Subatomic Particles

Dalton was only partially correct about the particles that make up matter. All matter is composed of atoms, and atoms are composed of three smaller subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. These three particles account for the mass and the charge of an atom. The Discovery of the Electron The first clue about the subatomic structure came at the end of the 19th century when J.J. Thomson discovered the electron using a cathode ray tube. This apparatus consisted of a sealed glass...

(2016).This video demonstrates the step-by-step process for concentrating and purifying lentiviral particles from a mixed suspension containing host cell debris. The procedure utilizes centrifugation, filtration, and PEG-salt precipitation to isolate viral particles while removing soluble impurities. The final product is resuspended in a...

Classification of Leukocytes

2025

Leukocytes are classified into two groups based on the presence or absence of cytoplasmic granules. Granular leukocytes, which contain granules, belong to the myeloid lineage and are divided into three subtypes: neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils. These cells are roughly spherical and characterized by the granules in their cytoplasm. Neutrophils are the most abundant type of granular leukocytes, comprising 50-70% of all leukocytes. They feature small, evenly distributed granules and a...

Classification of Illness

The meaning of illness is individualized to each person who experiences an alteration in health. In contrast, disease is a medical term indicating a pathological change in the structure and function of the body or mind. It is a condition that has specific symptoms and boundaries. An illness is a response to a disease in which the person's level of functioning is changed compared with a previous level. The general classification of illness includes acute and chronic. Acute illness is severe and...

Classification of Bones

2025

The bones of the human skeletal system are of varied shapes, sizes, and functions. They can be classified based on their shape and function into four major classes: long bones, short bones, flat bones, and irregular bones. Some classifications include a fifth type, the sesamoid bones, as a separate class, whereas others categorize them under short bones. Long and Short Bones The appendicular skeleton, particularly the upper and lower limbs, is primarily made of long and short bones. The long...
