Power System Protection

Power system protection is the engineering discipline that detects and isolates electrical faults or abnormal operating conditions to protect generators, transformers, transmission lines, distribution equipment, and people. Instrument transformers measure current and voltage, while protective relays analyze these signals for conditions such as short circuits, overloads, ground faults, or loss of synchronism; when criteria are met, the relay sends a trip signal to a circuit breaker, which disconnects the affected section. Properly coordinated protection provides selective, rapid fault clearing while maintaining service in healthy parts of the grid. It is essential for limiting equipment damage, improving system stability and reliability, and supporting safe operation of modern power networks.

Introduction to the Power Pole Board

2023

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. DC/DC converters are power electronic converters that convert DC voltages and currents from a certain level to another level. Typically, voltage conversion is the main purpose of DC/DC converters and three main types of conversion exist in a single converter: stepping up, stepping down, and stepping up or down. Among the most common step-up converters are boost converters (Refer to this collections...

The concept of work involves force and displacement; meanwhile, the work-energy theorem relates the net work done on a body to the difference in its kinetic energy, calculated between two points on its trajectory. While none of these quantities or relations involves time explicitly, we know that the time available to accomplish work is often just as important as the amount of work itself. For example, sprinters in a race may have achieved the same velocity at the finish, therefore,...

Construction of Constant-Load (Isotonic) and Constant-Velocity (Isokinetic) Torque-Velocity-Power Profiles In vivo for the Rat Plantar Flexors

2025

Here, we present a novel protocol to non-invasively measure the torque-angular velocity-power relationship in vivo in rat plantar flexors using transcutaneous muscle stimulation. This setup enables simple testing of isotonic muscle contractions on a force transducer/length controller system to better represent the constant-load nature of everyday movements.

Zones of Protection

In power systems, the entire setup is divided into protective zones to isolate faults and protect the rest of the network. These zones include generators, transformers, buses, transmission lines, distribution lines, and motors. Each zone can be visualized as a separate room in a house, with each room protected by its own circuit breaker. Protective zones are defined by closed dashed lines, containing one or more components. A key characteristic of these zones is the strategic placement of...

Protection of Alcohols

This lesson delves into the concept of protection and deprotection of a functional group fundamental to synthetic organic chemistry. These phenomena are explained in the context of aliphatic and aromatic alcohols. Protection It defines a protecting group as the masking agent to make the more reactive species inert to a given set of conditions. This concept is depicted via the illustration of liquid flow through different outlets in an assembly of pipes. The analogy helps to understand the role...
