Single Photon Emission

Single photon emission is the generation of light one quantum, or photon, at a time, enabling precise control of optical energy and information. It occurs when an isolated quantum emitter, such as an atom, molecule, defect, or semiconductor quantum dot, transitions from an excited state to a lower-energy state and releases a single photon; electrical or optical excitation can trigger this process. Engineering systems use single-photon sources in quantum communication, optical sensing, secure information processing, and photonic circuits, where controlled emission improves measurement sensitivity and data security. Characterizing photon number, timing, wavelength, and indistinguishability helps researchers integrate reliable sources into emerging quantum technologies.

Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography for Assessing Brain Function Disruption

2025

A traumatic brain injury, or TBI, impairs blood flow to the impacted regions and disrupts the activity of dopaminergic neurons. To investigate TBI-associated disruptions, begin by intravenously injecting a lipophilic radioactive tracer into a patient. The tracer travels through the cerebral vessels and diffuses into cells of the cortical and subcortical brain tissue.Perform single photon emission computed tomography, or SPECT, to detect the tracer-emitted radiation. The resulting signal intensity...

Emission Spectra

When solids, liquids, or condensed gases are heated sufficiently, they radiate some of the excess energy as light. Photons produced in this manner have a range of energies, and thereby produce a continuous spectrum in which an unbroken series of wavelengths is present. In contrast to continuous spectra, light can also occur as discrete or line spectra having very narrow linewidths interspersed throughout the spectral regions. Exciting a gas at low partial pressure using an electrical current,...

Source: Wang, Z., et al. Transpupillary Two-Photon In Vivo Imaging of the Mouse Retina. J. Vis. Exp. (2021).This video demonstrates a technique for in vivo retinal imaging using two-photon microscopy. Anesthetized mice are prepared for imaging by securing their heads, Applying eye lubricant, and placing a coverslip over the eye. Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) expressing fluorescent proteins are first visualized using epifluorescence for alignment. Finally, two-photon imaging is employed,...
