Spice Coordinate Frames

SPICE coordinate frames are reference systems used to describe the positions and orientations of spacecraft, instruments, planets, and other bodies consistently in space and time. Within NASA’s SPICE system, frame definitions and orientation data are stored in kernel files, allowing software to transform vectors between frames through fixed or time-dependent rotations. These transformations may connect inertial, body-fixed, spacecraft, and instrument frames, while accounting for changing spacecraft attitude or planetary rotation. Engineers use SPICE coordinate frames to analyze spacecraft geometry, plan observations, calculate pointing and visibility, and interpret mission data with a common spatial reference.

Framing Effects

2020

Information is everywhere and its presentation—such as how and when items are presented—can impact our perceptions and decisions surrounding the info. This broad concept umbrellas framing effects—influences that occur due to the way information is framed in its appearance, whether it’s purely the order or the specific wording of a message. Let’s take a look at numerous ways in which two versions of something can objectively say the same thing, yet we respond in different ways based on the...

Frames are essential components of various mechanical and structural systems used daily. These structures are known for their stability and ability to bear heavy loads. A frame is constructed using two-force and multi-force members, interconnected using pin joints. In contrast, trusses are made entirely of two-force members. Frames are versatile and widely used in various applications such as structural supports for beams and columns, automobile chassis construction, and in the construction...

For transition metal complexes, the coordination number determines the geometry around the central metal ion. Table 1 compares coordination numbers to molecular geometry. The most common structures of the complexes in coordination compounds are octahedral, tetrahedral, and square planar. Coordinate mapping is a method of documenting salient features of hyolaryngeal biomechanics in the pharyngeal phase of swallowing. This methodology uses image analysis software to record coordinates of anatomical landmarks. These coordinates are imported into an excel macro and translated into kinematic variables of interest useful in dysphagia research.

Frames: Problem Solving II

Consider a hydraulic hoist supporting a load of 1 kN. Assuming a simplified schematic representation of this frame structure, the force acting on BD and BF members can be determined. The member dimensions and the weight of the load are known parameters. This structure can be considered a frame with BF and BD acting as two-force members, while EFG and EDC are multi-force members. A free-body diagram for the member EFG is considered. The inclined force FBF can be resolved into the vertical and...
