Temperature Field Analysis

Temperature field analysis is the study of how temperature varies across space and time within a material, component, or system, providing essential insight into thermal performance and safety. It uses measurements or computational models to solve heat-transfer equations, accounting for conduction, convection, radiation, material properties, heat sources, and boundary conditions. In engineering, this analysis helps identify thermal gradients, hot spots, and heat flow pathways in structures, electronics, energy systems, and manufacturing processes. Results support component design, material selection, thermal management, failure prevention, and optimization of energy efficiency under steady-state or transient operating conditions.

We demonstrate use of a fiber optic distributed sensor for mapping the temperature field of mixing air jets. The Rayleigh scattering-based sensor generates thousands of data points along a single fiber to provide exceptional spatial resolution that is unattainable with traditional sensors such as thermocouples.

Design and Analysis of Temperature Preference Behavior and its Circadian Rhythm in Drosophila

2014

We recently identified a novel Drosophila circadian output, temperature preference rhythm (TPR), in which the preferred temperature in flies rises during the day and falls during the night. TPR is regulated independently from another circadian output, locomotor activity. Here we describe the design and analysis of TPR in Drosophila.

With the advent of small, low-cost environmental sensors, it is now possible to deploy high-density networks of sensors to measure hyper localized temperature variation. Here, we provide a detailed methodology for constructing a compact version of a previously described custom-fabricated radiation shield for use with inexpensive thermochrons.
