Dust Mobilization

Dust mobilization is the entrainment and transport of loose mineral particles from soil or sediment surfaces into the atmosphere, where it influences air quality, ecosystems, and climate. It begins when wind stress exceeds a surface’s threshold for particle movement, causing larger grains to hop by saltation while finer particles become suspended by turbulence and may travel long distances. In environmental research, measuring dust flux, source regions, and atmospheric loading helps assess soil erosion, visibility reduction, pollutant transport, biogeochemical cycling, and climate effects.

Dust charging and mobilization is demonstrated in three experiments with exposure to thermal plasma with beam electrons, beam electrons only, or ultraviolet (UV) radiation only. These experiments present the advanced understanding of electrostatic dust transport and its role in shaping the surfaces of airless planetary bodies.

We present a technique to achieve low-velocity to intermediate-velocity collisions between fragile dust aggregates in the laboratory. For this purpose, two vacuum drop-tower setups have been developed that allow collision velocities between <0.01 and ~10 m/sec. The collision events are recorded by high-speed imaging.

Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay (EMSA)

2023

The electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) is a biochemical procedure used to elucidate binding between proteins and nucleic acids. In this assay a radiolabeled nucleic acid and test protein are mixed. Binding is determined via gel electrophoresis which separates components based on mass, charge, and conformation. This video shows the concepts of EMSA and a general procedure, including gel and protein preparation, binding, electrophoresis, and detection. Applications covered in this video...

Mobile Marketing
