Free Light Fraction

Free light fraction is the low-density portion of soil organic matter, consisting mainly of relatively undecomposed plant residues and organic particles that are not strongly bound to mineral surfaces. Researchers isolate it through density fractionation, which separates soil components according to density so the free light fraction remains buoyant while denser mineral-associated material settles. Because this fraction responds comparatively quickly to vegetation, cultivation, and decomposition, it serves as a sensitive indicator of soil organic matter turnover and carbon cycling. Measuring it helps assess soil quality, evaluate land-management effects, and improve understanding of carbon storage and environmental change.

Fractional Distillation

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Nicholas Leadbeater — University of Connecticut Distillation is perhaps the most common laboratory technique employed by chemists for the purification of organic liquids. Compounds in a mixture with different boiling points separate into individual components when the mixture is carefully distilled. The two main types of distillation are "simple distillation" and "fractional distillation", and both are widely used in organic chemistry laboratories. Simple distillation...

Crude and fractionated Xenopus egg extracts can be used to provide ingredients for reconstituting cellular processes for morphological and biochemical analysis. Egg lysis and differential centrifugation are used to prepare the crude extract which in turn in used to prepare fractionated extracts and light membrane preparations.

Gas sampling from laboratory-scale flames with online analysis of all species by mass spectrometry is a powerful method to investigate the complex mixture of chemical compounds occurring during combustion processes. Coupled with tunable soft ionization via synchrotron-generated vacuum-ultraviolet radiation, this technique provides isomer-resolved information and potentially fragment-free mass spectra.
