Impedance Readings Analysis

Impedance Readings Analysis is the interpretation of electrical impedance measurements to characterize how a material or system responds to an applied alternating current. The analysis separates resistance, which reflects opposition to current flow, from reactance, which reflects energy storage and phase behavior, often across multiple frequencies. In environmental research, these readings can help assess conductivity, moisture, salinity, dielectric properties, and changes associated with dissolved substances or contamination in soil and water. Comparing impedance patterns over time or across locations supports non-destructive monitoring, improves material and ecosystem characterization, and can provide an efficient basis for detecting environmental change.

In this video, we demonstrate the process of real-time monitoring of cellular events, including the proliferation of adherent cells, via a cellular impedance assay. Here, the adherent cells act as insulators, restricting the current flow between the electrodes and increasing the impedance.

Research articles are structured documents designed to communicate scientific findings efficiently and transparently. Rather than reading them sequentially like a narrative, readers can approach them strategically by understanding their standardized organization. Evaluating the title, authors, and institutional affiliations provides an initial indication of relevance, expertise, and credibility. The Abstract offers a concise summary of the study’s objective, methodology, and main findings,...

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electrical resistance is the ability of an electrical circuit element to resist the flow of electricity. Resistance is defined by Ohm's Law: (Equation 1) Where is the voltage and is the current. Ohm's law is useful for determining the resistance of ideal resistors. However, many circuit elements are more complex and can't be described by...

(2020)This video demonstrates an impedance-based assay to measure glioblastoma cell invasion and migration. Cells degrade the extracellular matrix, move through microporous membranes, and adhere to electrodes, generating impedance. This real-time analysis reflects their invasive potential for cancer research applications.

2019

Long-read sequences greatly facilitate the assembly of complex genomes and characterization of structural variation. We describe a method to generate ultra-long sequences by nanopore-based sequencing platforms. The approach adopts an optimized DNA extraction followed by modified library preparations to generate hundreds of kilobase reads with moderate coverage from human cells.
