Root Growth Visualization

Root growth visualization is the imaging and tracking of root development to reveal how plants respond to their surroundings. Researchers observe changes such as root elongation, branching, direction, and spatial distribution over time, often by growing plants in conditions that keep roots accessible to imaging while controlling environmental variables. These observations connect root architecture with factors including water availability, soil structure, nutrient distribution, and environmental stress. By documenting growth patterns and responses, root growth visualization supports studies of plant adaptation, soil-plant interactions, resource acquisition, and environmental resilience, while helping researchers compare species or treatments under defined conditions.

Visualizing and measuring root growth in situ is extremely challenging. We present a customizable rhizobox method to track root development and proliferation over time in response to nutrient enrichment. This method is used to analyze maize genotypic differences in root plasticity in response to an organic nitrogen source.

Primary and Secondary Growth in Roots and Shoots

2026

Vascular plants, which account for over 90% of the Earth’s vegetation, all undergo primary growth—which lengthens roots and shoots. Many land plants, notably woody plants, also undergo secondary growth—which thickens roots and shoots.Primary and secondary growth can occur simultaneously in a plant. While primary growth occurs in newer plant regions, secondary growth transpires in regions that have completed primary growth. There are overlaps and distinctions between root growth and shoot growth.
