Sediment Core Sampling

Sediment core sampling is a method for collecting an intact, vertically layered section of deposited material from the seafloor, lakebed, or wetland, preserving a record of environmental change over time. A coring device penetrates unconsolidated sediment and retains it in a liner, allowing researchers to examine successive layers through stratigraphic analysis, geochemical measurements, and biological indicators such as microfossils or pollen. In environmental research, these cores help reconstruct past climate conditions, pollution histories, erosion, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem responses. The resulting records support environmental monitoring, risk assessment, and predictions of how aquatic and terrestrial systems may respond to future change.

This method estimates sediment denitrification rates in sediment cores using the acetylene inhibition technique and microsensor measurements of the accumulated N2O. The protocol describes procedures for collecting the cores, calibrating the sensors, performing the acetylene inhibition, measuring the N2O accumulation, and calculating the denitrification rate.

Source: Elizabeth Suter1, Christopher Corbo1, Jonathan Blaize1 1 Department of Biological Sciences, Wagner College, 1 Campus Road, Staten Island NY, 10301 The Winogradsky column is a miniature, enclosed ecosystem used for enriching sediment microbial communities, especially those involved in sulfur cycling. The column was first used by Sergei Winogradsky in the 1880s and has since been applied in the study of many diverse microorganisms involved in biogeochemistry, such as photosynthesizers,...

Soil Core Sample Collection for Water Retention Property Analysis

Source:Alessia J. Marchesan1, Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez11Renewable Resources, University of Alberta. This video demonstrates the technique for collecting a soil sample for hydraulic property analysis. The sampling area is cleared, and the top crust is evacuated. The sampling ring is then placed into the soil to collect the sample. The ring with the sample is then cleaned, labeled, packed, and transferred undisturbed for analysis.
