Manual Validation

Manual validation is the systematic review of data, measurements, or analytical outputs by a person to confirm their accuracy, completeness, and suitability for a defined purpose. In environmental research, validators inspect source records, sampling conditions, calculation steps, and quality-control results, then compare findings with expected ranges, field observations, or independent measurements. This process can identify transcription errors, instrument problems, anomalous values, and limitations that automated checks may miss. Manual validation strengthens environmental monitoring, compliance reporting, and model assessment by improving confidence in results and documenting the reasoning behind data acceptance, correction, or rejection.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Rabbits possess powerful hindlimb musculature and are susceptible to spinal injury if they struggle or kick while inadequately supported. Because rabbits vary in temperament and may struggle during restraint, handlers should...

Reliability and Validity

Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways. Unfortunately, being consistent in measurement does not necessarily mean that you have measured something correctly. To illustrate this concept, consider a kitchen...

As manual dexterity is a prerogative mainly of primates, behavioral tasks have been developed in macaque monkeys. Four reach and grasp prehension tasks, measuring hand manipulation ability and force, allow to establish functional recovery after a lesion of the central nervous system and to test the effect of a treatment.
