Stereo-photogrammetry

Stereo-photogrammetry is a method for reconstructing three-dimensional shape, position, and distance from overlapping photographs, making it valuable for measuring environments without direct contact. It uses images captured from different viewpoints to identify corresponding features, calculate their geometric displacement, and apply triangulation to generate 3D coordinates, surface models, or point clouds. In environmental research, stereo-photogrammetry supports terrain mapping, vegetation and habitat assessment, erosion monitoring, coastal surveys, and documentation of landscape change. Repeated image acquisition can reveal changes in elevation, surface structure, and spatial organization, providing quantitative evidence for environmental monitoring and conservation planning.

This protocol uses multi-view stereo to generate three-dimensional (3D) models out of uncalibrated sequences of photographs, making it affordable and adjustable to a surgical setting. Strain maps between the 3D models are quantified with spline-based isogeometric kinematics, which facilitate representation of smooth surfaces over coarse meshes sharing the same parameterization.

Stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) aids in localization of epileptogenic zones, however, remains relatively underutilized in the United States. The goal of this abstract is to provide a brief introduction to the technique of SEEG and further a detailed technique of using robotic assistance in the placement of SEEG electrodes.
