Antibiotic Antifungal Mixture

An antibiotic antifungal mixture is a laboratory reagent that combines antibacterial and antifungal agents to limit microbial contamination in cell cultures and other biological preparations. When added to culture media under recommended conditions, its components target essential bacterial and fungal processes, suppressing unwanted growth while cells or tissues are maintained for study. In immunology and infection research, this mixture helps preserve culture integrity during experiments involving immune cells, host-pathogen interactions, and infection models. Proper use supports more reliable observations, although it cannot replace aseptic technique or serve as a treatment for infection.

An In Vitro Broth Microdilution Assay for the Screening of Antifungal Compounds

2025

This video demonstrates an in vitro assay to screen antifungal compounds using a broth microdilution assay. Test compounds are serially diluted in a microtiter plate and incubated with a fungal inoculum. Post-incubation, the plate is examined for wells without visible fungal growth to assess the antifungal potential of the test compounds and their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC).

Mixtures of Acids

The pH of a solution containing an acid can be determined using its acid dissociation constant and its initial concentration. If a solution contains two different acids, then its pH can be determined using one of several methods depending upon the relative strength of the acids and their dissociation constants. A Mixture of a Strong Acid and a Weak Acid In a mixture of a strong acid and a weak acid, the strong acid dissociates completely and becomes a source of almost all the hydronium ions...

Amphotericin B is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent that exploits structural differences between fungal and mammalian cell membranes. Its amphipathic structure—featuring a hydrophobic polyene-lactone ring and a hydrophilic region containing mycosamine and carboxylic acid groups—enables selective binding to ergosterol, a sterol predominantly found in fungal plasma membranes. This selective interaction underlies the drug’s antifungal activity, although weak binding to cholesterol contributes to...

Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing: Epsilometer Tests to Determine MIC Values of Two Antibiotics and Evaluate Antibiotic Synergy

In 1928, Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, an antibiotic that exerts its antibacterial function by interfering with cell wall regeneration (1). Other antibiotics with diverse mechanisms of...
