Fluorine Mri

Fluorine MRI is a specialized imaging technique that detects fluorine-19 nuclei to visualize fluorinated probes within the body, complementing conventional proton MRI with highly specific molecular information. Because biological tissues contain little naturally occurring fluorine, administered fluorocarbon compounds can generate a low-background signal, while the fluorine signal intensity can indicate the location and relative amount of labeled material. In immunology and infection research, fluorine-containing nanoparticles can label immune cells for noninvasive tracking, helping assess cell migration, accumulation, and persistence at inflammatory or infectious sites. This approach supports studies of host responses, immune-cell therapies, and disease progression.

Tools to diagnose bile acid malabsorption and measure bile acid transport in vivo are limited. An innovative approach in live animals is described that utilizes combined proton (1H) plus fluorine (19F) magnetic resonance imaging; this novel methodology has translational potential to screen for bile acid malabsorption in clinical practice.

Simultaneous PET/MRI Imaging During Mouse Cerebral Hypoxia-ischemia

The method presented here uses simultaneous positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. In the cerebral hypoxia-ischemia model, dynamic changes in diffusion and glucose metabolism occur during and after injury. The evolving and irreproducible damage in this model necessitates simultaneous acquisition if meaningful multi-modal imaging data are to be acquired.

A technique is described for broadly opening the blood-brain barrier in the mouse using microbubbles and ultrasound. Using this technique, manganese can be administered to the mouse brain. Because manganese is an MRI contrast agent that accumulates in depolarized neurons, this approach enables imaging of neuronal activity.
