Vortex Mixing

Vortex mixing is a laboratory technique that rapidly blends liquid samples, reagents, or suspensions by creating a circular vortex, helping produce uniform mixtures for reliable analysis. A motor drives a rubber cup or platform in a rapid orbital motion, transferring mechanical energy to the container and generating turbulent flow that disperses particles and equalizes dissolved components. In immunology and infection research, vortex mixing supports reagent preparation, microbial and cell-sample processing, nucleic acid workflows, and resuspension steps before assays. Consistent mixing can improve sample homogeneity, reaction reproducibility, and downstream measurements, while excessive agitation may damage fragile cells or generate aerosols.

Flow Visualization in a Water Tunnel: Observing the Leading-edge Vortex Over a Delta Wing

2023

Source: Jose Roberto Moreto, Gustaaf Jacobs and Xiaofeng Liu, Department of Aerospace Engineering, San Diego State University, San Diego, California The delta wing, shown in Figure 1D, is a popular design in high-speed airplanes due to its superb performance in transonic and supersonic flight regimes. This type of wing has a small aspect ratio and high sweep angle, which reduces drag at high subsonic, transonic and supersonic flight regimes. The aspect ratio is defined as the wing span divided...

Mixed Strategies

2025

In game theory, mixed strategies involve players choosing their actions randomly from a set of available options. This approach contrasts with pure strategies, where players select a specific action with certainty. Mixed strategies become relevant in scenarios where there is no pure strategy equilibrium. A mixed-strategies Nash equilibrium occurs when players adopt strategies so that no one can benefit by unilaterally changing their own strategy, given the strategies of the others. In this...
