Figure Dilation

Figure dilation is a geometric transformation that enlarges or reduces a figure while preserving its shape and angle measures. Using a center of dilation and a scale factor, each point moves along a line through that center, and its distance from the center is multiplied by the scale factor; on a coordinate plane centered at the origin, this can be represented by mapping (x, y) to (kx, ky). A scale factor greater than one produces an enlargement, while a factor between zero and one produces a reduction. Dilation supports the study of similarity, scale drawings, proportional reasoning, and geometric modeling.

Uncertainty in Measurement: Significant Figures

2020

All the digits in a measurement, including the uncertain last digit, are called significant figures or significant digits. Note that zero may be a measured value; for example, if a scale that shows weight to the nearest pound reads “140,” then the 1 (hundreds), 4 (tens), and 0 (ones) are all significant (measured) values. A measurement result is properly reported when its significant digits accurately represent the certainty of the measurement process. Below are a set of rules to determine the...

The purpose of this algorithm is to continuously measure the distance between two 2-dimensional edges using serial image dilations and pathfinding. This algorithm can be applied to a variety of fields such as cardiac structural biology, vascular biology, and civil engineering.

Rules for Significant Figures

In any measurement, the precision of the measuring tool is an essential factor. An ordinary ruler, for example, can measure length to the closest millimeter; a caliper, on the other hand, can measure length to the nearest 0.01 mm. As a result, the caliper is a more precise measurement tool because it can measure extremely minute changes in length. The measurements will be more accurate if the measuring tool is more precise. It should be emphasized that when we represent measured values, the...

Significant Figures in Calculations

Uncertainty in measurements can be avoided by reporting the results of a calculation with the correct number of significant figures. This can be determined by the following rules for rounding numbers: When adding or subtracting numbers, round the result to the same number of decimal places as the number with the least number of decimal places. When multiplying or dividing numbers, round the result to the same number of digits as the number with the least number of significant figures. If...
