Catgut-embedding Needle

Catgut-embedding needle is a specialized hollow needle used in an acupuncture technique to place absorbable catgut beneath the skin at selected acupoints, extending stimulation beyond a conventional needle session. As the implanted material remains in tissue and gradually biodegrades, it provides sustained mechanical stimulation and may influence local sensory signaling and tissue responses. In medicine, the method is used within traditional Chinese medicine practice and investigated for chronic pain and other persistent symptoms, although outcomes depend on the condition and treatment protocol. Understanding needle design, placement, material absorption, and safety supports standardized training and more rigorous evaluation of this specialized intervention.
