Catheterization Procedure

Catheterization is a medical procedure that uses a thin, flexible tube, called a catheter, to access a body cavity, blood vessel, or duct for diagnosis or treatment. Clinicians insert the catheter through a natural opening or a small puncture and guide it to a target site, where it can drain fluids, deliver medication, measure pressure, or provide access for imaging and other interventions. Common examples include urinary catheterization and cardiac catheterization. The procedure supports fluid management, monitoring, and minimally invasive treatment, while careful sterile technique and appropriate catheter selection help reduce infection, tissue injury, and other complications.

Cardiac Catheterization I: Pre-Procedure Overview

2025

Cardiac catheterization is an invasive diagnostic technique used to identify and evaluate structural and functional diseases of the heart and major blood vessels. This technique diagnoses congenital heart disease, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, and coronary spasms and assesses ventricular function. It helps guide treatment decisions, including the need for revascularization procedures like percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and...

We describe a novel surgical method for catheterizing 'intestinal loops' within the ileum of sheep. Once animals have recovered from surgery and have cleared antibiotics and analgesics, multiple treatments can be deposited directly in loops via the catheters.

The use of domestic and miniature pigs in science has increased significantly in recent years. By demonstrating how to perform intubation, transurethral bladder catheterization, femoral artery and vein catheterization, as well as transcardial perfusion, we aim to further increase the value of Göttingen minipigs in biomedical research.

Right Heart Catheterization: An OverviewRight heart catheterization is an invasive diagnostic procedure that measures right-sided cardiac and pulmonary artery pressures, calculates cardiac output, and identifies intracardiac shunts. It provides detailed hemodynamic data essential for diagnosing and managing various cardiovascular conditions, such as pulmonary hypertension.Access SitesCommon access sites for right heart catheterization include the internal jugular vein in the neck region, the...
