Cystotome Use

Cystotome use is a microsurgical technique in which a fine, bent needle creates an opening in the lens capsule during cataract surgery. The cystotome punctures the anterior capsule and guides a controlled tear, helping form a continuous circular capsulotomy while limiting unintended extension into surrounding tissue. This opening provides access to the cloudy lens for removal and supports placement of an intraocular lens. Proper cystotome handling requires precise pressure, stable instrument control, and clear visualization through the operating microscope. The technique remains an important foundational skill in ophthalmic surgery and cataract procedure training.

Capsulorhexis is an important step in phacoemulsification surgery. A surgeon creates a continous curvilinear tear on the anterior lens capsule by controlling the tearing vector forces. A peripherally extended tear is a serious complication. This video demonstrates a novel technique of rescuing capsular radial tear out using a cystotome.

Three-dimensional co-culture spheroid angiogenesis assay system is designed to mimic the physiologic angiogenesis. Co-culture spheroids are formed by two human vascular cell precursors, ECFCs and MSCs, and embedded in collagen gel. The new system is effective for evaluating angiogenic modulators, and provides more relevant information to the in vivo study.
