Clinical Eae Scores

Clinical EAE scores are standardized clinical ratings used to measure neurological impairment in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of inflammatory demyelinating disease and multiple sclerosis. Investigators assign ordinal scores by observing disease features such as tail weakness, impaired righting, hind-limb paresis, or paralysis, using predefined criteria to track disease onset, progression, and recovery. In medicine and neuroimmunology research, these scores provide a practical outcome measure for comparing disease severity across animals and evaluating treatments that target immune activation, inflammation, or demyelination. Consistent scoring improves experimental reproducibility and helps interpret therapeutic efficacy, although results depend on the scoring scale and observer standardization.

This video demonstrates the induction and clinical scoring of an animal model of multiple sclerosis: chronic-relapsing experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in DA rats. The disease, induced by immunizing rats with an emulsion containing whole rat spinal cord and complete Freund's adjuvant, presents clinical signs resembling the human disease.

The transplantation of neural stem/progenitor cells (NPCs) holds great promises in regenerative neurology. The systemic delivery of NPCs has turned into effective, low invasive, and therapeutically very efficacious protocol to deliver stem cells in the brain and spinal cord of rodents and nonhuman primates affected by experimental chronic inflammatory damage of the central nervous system.

Certain mouse strains are able to resist induction of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) with myelin basic protein. Described here is a simple immunization protocol that reverses the unresponsiveness and induces paralytic disease in several typical EAE resistant mouse stains.
