Esophagojejunostomy

Esophagojejunostomy is a surgical procedure that connects the esophagus to the jejunum, allowing swallowed material to pass into the small intestine when the stomach or proximal digestive tract is absent, bypassed, or unusable. Surgeons create a controlled anastomosis using sutures or stapling, often through an open or minimally invasive approach, while protecting blood supply and limiting tension and leakage at the connection. The reconstruction is commonly used after total gastrectomy, for selected esophageal or gastric diseases, and in complex gastrointestinal surgery. Successful healing restores alimentary continuity, while complications such as anastomotic leak, stricture, or reflux require careful monitoring and management.
