Far Lateral Discectomy

Far Lateral Discectomy is a spinal surgical technique used to remove herniated disc material located outside the spinal canal, particularly in the foraminal or extraforaminal region. Through a lateral or extreme-lateral surgical corridor, the surgeon reaches the affected disc, extracts the compressive fragment, and decompresses the exiting nerve root while limiting manipulation of the central canal and dural sac. This approach is valuable for selected lumbar disc herniations causing radicular pain or neurologic symptoms, and it requires careful attention to bony anatomy and neural structures to achieve adequate decompression while minimizing approach-related injury.

Lateralization

2024

Brain lateralization refers to the division of mental processes and functions between the two hemispheres of the brain, a phenomenon that optimizes neural efficiency and underpins complex abilities in humans. This specialization allows each hemisphere to perform tasks where it has a comparative advantage, facilitating more refined cognitive capabilities across different domains. • The left hemisphere is particularly proficient in managing logical and language-related activities. • It plays a...

Because many zebrafish models of neurological and non-neurological diseases are studied in the adult fish rather than the embryo/larvae, we developed a quantitative lateral line regenerative assay that can be applied to adult zebrafish disease models. The assay involved resolution at the 1) neuromast and 2) individual hair cell levels.
