Feature Selection Methods

Feature selection methods are systematic approaches for identifying the most informative variables in a dataset while removing redundant, irrelevant, or noisy features. They work through filter methods that rank variables using statistical criteria, wrapper methods that evaluate subsets with a predictive model, or embedded methods that select features during model training, thereby reducing dimensionality and computational complexity. In medicine, these methods help analyze clinical records, imaging measurements, genomic data, and biomarkers by focusing models on signals linked to diagnosis, prognosis, or treatment response. Careful feature selection can improve interpretability and generalization, support more efficient clinical prediction, and reduce the risk of overfitting in biomedical research.

2017

'Super-selective' adrenal venous sampling (ssAVS, also called segmental adrenal venous sampling: sAVS) was performed using a micro-catheter to identify adrenal segment(s) that produce excessive amounts of hormones. The ssAVS technique was described, cases in which adrenal segmental lesion(s) were identified by ssAVS were presented, and the usefulness of ssAVS in future adrenal research was discussed.

Fitness Widespread variation of phenotypes in natural populations provides the raw material for evolution, which is the change in the inherited traits of populations over successive generations. Natural selection is one of the main mechanisms of evolution and requires variable traits to be heritable and associated with differential survival and/or reproductive success. Phenotypes that correlate with greater success will have more offspring that survive to reproduce in the next generation, and...

Visual Search for Features and Conjunctions

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University How do people find objects in cluttered visual scenes? Think, for example, of looking for keys on a messy desk, finding the ripest-looking fruit at the grocery store, locating your car when you can’t quite remember where you parked it, or finding an old friend at an airport exit gate. Clearly, an understanding of visual perception is going to play a role in any answers, and more specifically, an understanding of visual attention...
