Fluorescein Injection

Fluorescein injection is a diagnostic procedure that introduces the fluorescent dye fluorescein into the bloodstream to visualize blood flow, particularly in the retinal and choroidal vessels of the eye. After intravenous administration, the dye circulates through ocular vasculature and emits yellow-green fluorescence when illuminated with appropriate light, allowing sequential imaging of vascular filling and leakage. Fluorescein angiography uses this signal to assess retinal circulation and identify abnormalities such as vessel blockage, leakage, or changes associated with eye disease. The resulting images support clinical diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring of vascular disorders affecting vision.

Subretinal injections are the most common technique for delivering large therapeutic agents such as proteins and viral vectors to photoreceptors and the retinal pigment epithelium. An alternative method in mice that successfully targets the subretinal space with minimal collateral damage and fast recovery times is described here.
