Fluorescent Laparoscopic Hepatectomy

Fluorescent laparoscopic hepatectomy is a minimally invasive liver resection technique that combines laparoscopic surgery with fluorescence imaging to improve visualization of tumors, liver segments, and critical anatomy. After intravenous administration, indocyanine green binds to plasma proteins and emits near-infrared fluorescence, allowing a laparoscopic camera to identify retained dye in or around lesions and highlight perfused tissue. Surgeons use this real-time guidance to plan resection margins, distinguish tumor-bearing from normal liver, and support anatomical segmentectomy while limiting unnecessary tissue removal. The approach may improve lesion localization and intraoperative decision-making, with potential benefits for precision, safety, and postoperative liver preservation.

Here we present a step-by-step protocol for conducting laparoscopic anterior right hepatectomy and compare its clinical effects and postoperative outcomes with those of conventional hepatectomies. Analysis of the data of 82 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma revealed that laparoscopic anterior right hepatectomy had better clinical outcomes and survival rates than the conventional hepatectomy.
