Interventional Oncology

Interventional oncology is a subspecialty of medicine that uses minimally invasive, image-guided procedures to diagnose, treat, and manage cancer, often when surgery or systemic therapy alone is unsuitable. Using imaging such as computed tomography, ultrasound, or magnetic resonance guidance, clinicians place needles or catheters to deliver local treatments, including tumor ablation, embolization, or targeted drug delivery, while limiting injury to surrounding tissue. These approaches can control primary or metastatic tumors, relieve symptoms, and support personalized treatment plans. Interventional oncology also contributes to multidisciplinary cancer care by providing tissue sampling, monitoring treatment response, and developing less invasive options for complex disease.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Monitoring Animals for Signs of Pain and Distress Recognizing early signs of pain is essential for ethical animal research. Animals are routinely monitored using behavioral, physical, and physiological parameters that reflect...

Nursing Interventions I: Taxonomy of Nursing Interventions

Nursing interventions are chosen as part of the planning process to achieve patient outcomes. Once nursing diagnoses are determined, the goals and outcomes are specified, then the nursing interventions are selected and individualized according to the patient's situation. A nursing intervention is a treatment or action based on scientific concepts and knowledge from the nursing, behavioral, and physical sciences. Identifying and prioritizing nursing interventions based on the desired outcome is...

Nursing Interventions II: Selecting and Classifying the Nursing Interventions

Creating and executing a nursing diagnosis helps nurses plan care and guide patient, family, and community interventions. They are developed based on a patient's physical evaluation and support measuring the outcomes. It is not recommended to select random interventions throughout the planning process. Instead, consider the following six essential factors when choosing interventions: Characteristics of the nursing diagnosis Goals and expected outcomes Evidence basis (e.g., research or...
