Mechanical Threshold Measurement

Mechanical threshold measurement is a method for determining the minimum physical force that produces a detectable sensory response, making it useful for assessing how the nervous system processes touch, pressure, or mechanical pain. In a controlled test, calibrated mechanical stimuli are applied to a defined body site and increased or varied systematically until the participant reports a sensation or exhibits a measurable response; the required force represents the threshold. In medicine, this approach helps characterize sensory function, identify altered sensitivity associated with neurological or pain conditions, and monitor changes during treatment. It also supports research on peripheral nerve function and mechanisms of nociception.

2009

Algorithms assessing heat and mechanical pain thresholds in experimentally inflamed skin of human study subjects are shown. The two pain testing paradigms independently examine nociceptive processing by the two major peripheral nerve fiber populations transmitting pain, i.e., non-myelinated C fibers and small myelinated A-delta fibers.

The Staircase Procedure for Finding a Perceptual Threshold

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Psychophysics is the name for a set of methods in perceptual psychology designed in order to relate the actual intensity of stimuli to their perceptual intensity. One important aspect of psychophysics involves the measurement of perceptual thresholds: How bright does a light need to be for a person to be able to detect it? How little pressure applied to the skin is detectable? How soft can a sound be and still be heard? Put...
