Microvasculature Biomarkers

Microvasculature biomarkers are measurable molecular, cellular, or imaging indicators of the structure and function of small blood vessels, including capillaries, arterioles, and venules. They capture changes in endothelial integrity, vessel density, blood flow, permeability, or angiogenic signaling through circulating biomarker assays, tissue analysis, and microvascular imaging. In medicine, these markers help characterize conditions in which impaired perfusion or abnormal vessel growth contributes to disease, including diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disorders, and inflammatory disease. Their use can support earlier risk assessment, patient stratification, treatment monitoring, and evaluation of vascular responses while advancing research into tissue injury and repair.

2025

Source: Nishimura, C. et al. Quantification of Cerebral Vascular Architecture using Two-photon Microscopy in a Mouse Model of HIV-induced Neuroinflammation. J. Vis. Exp. (2016). This video demonstrates the in vivo visualization of cortical capillaries in the mouse brain using two-photon microscopy. It outlines the steps for injecting a fluorescent dye into an anesthetized mouse with a thin-skull cortical window, preparing the setup for imaging, and acquiring detailed images of brain...

2012

We describe a rat model of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that reveals the persistent alterations in neuroendocrine function and the delayed long-term, exaggerated fear response, characteristic of PTSD patients. The animal model and methods described here are useful for correlating biomarkers in brain nuclei, which are mechanistic but cannot be measured in patients, with biomarkers in peripheral white blood cells, which can.

Spatial Temporal Analysis of Fieldwise Flow in Microvasculature

To quantify microvascular flow from high speed capillary flow image sequences, we developed STAFF (Spatial Temporal Analysis of Fieldwise Flow) software. Across the full image field and over time, STAFF evaluates flow velocities and generates a sequence of color-coded spatial maps for visualization and tabular output for quantitative analyses.

DCE-MRI of Orthotopic Pancreatic Tumor Xenografts: A Method to Assess Microvasculature in a Target Tumor Tissue

2023

This video describes the technique of DCE-MRI for orthotropic pancreatic tumor xenografts in mice. DCE-MRI is a non-invasive method to analyze microvasculature in a target tissue, and useful to assess vascular response in a tumor following a novel therapy. This method will assist investigators to apply DCE-MRI for orthotopic gastrointestinal cancer mouse models.

An Overview of bGDGT Biomarker Analysis for Paleoclimatology

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst Throughout this series of videos, natural samples were extracted and purified in search of organic compounds, called biomarkers, that can relate information on climates and environments of the past. One of the samples analyzed was sediment. Sediments accumulate over geologic time in basins, depressions in the Earth into which sediment flows through the action of fluid (water or air), movement, and gravity. Two main types...
