Plant-derived Therapeutics

Plant-derived therapeutics are medicines made from whole plants, plant extracts, or purified molecules originally identified in botanical sources, and they remain important for treating disease and guiding drug discovery. Their effects arise when plant-derived bioactive compounds interact with molecular targets, such as enzymes, receptors, or signaling pathways; researchers isolate, characterize, standardize, and formulate these compounds to improve consistency and safety. In medicine, these therapies support applications ranging from infection and inflammation management to cancer treatment, while also providing chemical scaffolds for new drugs. Studying their pharmacology, toxicity, and production helps connect traditional botanical knowledge with evidence-based care.

Transmitting Plant Viruses Using Whiteflies

Improving our understanding of and our ability to manage many of the insect-transmitted plant viruses requires the use of the vector. Insect transmission of plant viruses is a tritrophic interaction, and as such requires the manipulation of insects, virus, and plant. Vectors must be reared in large numbers and manipulated in such a way as to insure high rates of transmission to test plants. The basics of rearing and manipulating the whitefly, Bemisa tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), a vector of...

Unveiling Therapeutic Opportunities with Melanoma Patient-derived Organoid Models

Here, we present a protocol to generate melanoma patient-derived organoids by culturing disassociated cell suspensions from fresh melanoma tissues. These organoids faithfully recapitulate patient-specific tumors in vitro, offering an innovative approach to exploring tumor immunosuppressive mechanisms, drug screening, drug resistance mechanisms, and cancer surveillance approaches.

From Water to Land Kingdom Plantae first appeared about 410 million years ago as green algae transitioned from water to land. Though challenging, this transition benefited early colonizers in several ways. Initially, most living organisms (including plants and animals) were ocean dwelling, making aquatic environments crowded and highly competitive. In contrast, land was a relatively uncolonized environment with ample resources and little to no predators or competitors. Terrestrial environments...
