Preclinical Instruction

Preclinical instruction is the foundational phase of medical education that builds knowledge of normal human structure and function before students begin direct patient care. It integrates subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, and pharmacology, showing how molecular and cellular mechanisms produce health, disease, and responses to treatment. Through lectures, laboratory activities, simulations, and case-based learning, students connect basic science with clinical reasoning and develop skills for interpreting symptoms, diagnostic findings, and therapeutic principles. Effective preclinical instruction establishes the scientific framework for clinical training, supports safer decision-making, and helps future physicians evaluate biomedical evidence throughout their careers.

Preclinical Development: Overview

2023

Preclinical development consists of a series of tests that ensure the safety and efficacy of a new therapeutic compound before it is tested in humans. There are four main phases to this process. First, safety pharmacology tests are conducted to ensure the drug does not produce any acutely harmful effects. These tests examine parameters such as bronchoconstriction, cardiac dysrhythmias, blood pressure changes, and ataxia. Next, preliminary toxicological testing is performed to determine the...
