Robotic Duodenal Resection

Robotic duodenal resection is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that removes a diseased or injured portion of the duodenum, the first segment of the small intestine, while aiming to preserve digestive function when appropriate. During the operation, a surgeon controls articulated instruments and a high-definition camera through small abdominal incisions; the system translates hand movements into precise dissection, tissue handling, and reconstruction under magnified visualization. The technique may be used for selected duodenal tumors, polyps, strictures, or other localized disease, depending on anatomy and patient factors. Its potential benefits include reduced tissue trauma, improved access to confined anatomy, and more precise repair.

2026

This video case report demonstrates the unique management of a duodenal gastrointestinal stromal tumor with a rare, understudied, exon 8 KIT mutation. Neoadjuvant therapy resulted in a 30% reduction in tumor size, making the patient a candidate for a robotic-assisted duodenal sleeve resection instead of the more morbid pancreaticoduodenectomy.

2023

This protocol presents a case of a robotic partial duodenal resection with primary side-to-side duodeno-jejunal reconstruction in a patient with a 5 cm duodenal stenosis. This is done at the third duodenal segment (D3) after an endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) for a duodenal polyp.

Application of Robot-assisted Pancreaticobiliary Junction Resection in Benign Duodenal Tumors

2026

This protocol presents robotic duodenum-preserving total pancreatic head resection (R-DPPHRt) for intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs). A video demonstrates the technique in a patient with main duct-IPMN, highlighting its feasibility as a minimally invasive, organ-preserving alternative to pancreaticoduodenectomy.
