Saphenous Vein Injection

Saphenous vein injection is a technique for delivering medications, fluids, or research substances directly into the venous circulation through the saphenous vein, a superficial vessel in the lower limb. The procedure involves locating and stabilizing the vein, introducing a needle or catheter into its lumen, and administering the substance so it enters systemic blood flow without passing through the gastrointestinal tract. In medicine and biomedical research, this approach provides controlled intravenous access for drug delivery, contrast administration, and experimental dosing, particularly when other peripheral veins are difficult to access. Proper anatomical identification and careful injection help reduce complications such as extravasation, bleeding, or tissue injury.

The mechanisms leading to the development of intimal hyperplasia (IH) and vein graft failure are still poorly understood. This study describes an ex vivo system to perfuse human veins under controlled flow and pressure. Furthermore the efficiency of external mesh reinforcement to limit the development of IH was evaluated.

Synergizing Antegrade Endoscopic with Bridging Vein Harvesting for Improvement of Great Saphenous Vein Graft Quality from the Lower Leg

Presented here is a protocol for antegrade endoscopic vein harvesting from the lower leg, which can safely be introduced in routine coronary artery bypass grafting. Vein grafts present excellent graft quality following this standardized protocol with positioning of the legs, minimally invasive access to the vein, and antegrade endoscopic vein harvesting.
