Totally Implantable Port

A totally implantable port is a small medical device placed beneath the skin to provide repeated, long-term access to the bloodstream without leaving an external catheter. It consists of a subcutaneous reservoir connected to a catheter, which enters a central vein; clinicians access the reservoir by inserting a specialized needle through the skin, allowing fluids or medications to flow directly into circulation. Totally implantable ports are commonly used for chemotherapy, prolonged intravenous treatments, blood sampling, and parenteral nutrition, particularly when peripheral veins are difficult to access. Their fully enclosed design can support mobility and reduce daily catheter care, while requiring sterile access and monitoring for infection, blockage, or other complications.
