Porcine Respiratory Model

A porcine respiratory model is a pig-based experimental system used to study respiratory anatomy, physiology, disease, and treatment responses in conditions that may resemble human pulmonary disorders. Its value arises from similarities in lung structure, airway organization, immune responses, and breathing mechanics, while controlled exposure, ventilation, imaging, sampling, or infection protocols allow researchers to examine disease mechanisms and therapeutic effects. These models support investigations of pneumonia, acute lung injury, respiratory infections, medical devices, and drug delivery. By linking laboratory findings with clinically relevant outcomes, porcine respiratory models can strengthen preclinical research and help guide the development and evaluation of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

We describe a model of hydrochloric acid-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in piglets receiving sedation with halogenated agents, isoflurane and sevoflurane, through a device used for inhaled intensive care sedation. This model can be used to investigate the biological mechanisms of halogenated agents on lung injury and repair.
