Visual Acuity Assessment

Visual acuity assessment is a clinical method for measuring the sharpness and clarity of vision, making it a fundamental screening tool in medicine. During testing, a patient identifies standardized letters, symbols, or patterns at a specified distance, usually with each eye tested separately; the smallest reliably recognized line is recorded as an acuity value, with or without corrective lenses. Results help clinicians detect reduced vision associated with refractive error, amblyopia, ocular disease, or neurological conditions, monitor changes over time, and determine whether further examination or treatment is needed. Standardized assessment also supports eye-care research and evaluation of visual outcomes.
