Bilateral Assessment

Bilateral assessment is the systematic evaluation of corresponding structures or functions on the left and right sides of the nervous system, helping reveal symmetry, specialization, and side-specific abnormalities. In neuroscience, researchers compare matched measures between hemispheres, limbs, sensory pathways, or paired brain regions while controlling for factors such as task demands, baseline performance, and individual variability. This approach can identify functional lateralization, characterize motor or sensory impairments, and distinguish localized dysfunction from broader neurological changes. Bilateral assessment supports neuroimaging, behavioral testing, clinical diagnosis, and rehabilitation by providing within-person comparisons that clarify how neural systems are organized and affected by disease or injury.

There is accumulating evidence, that ischemic preconditioning (PC) – a non-damaging ischemic challenge to the brain - confers a transient protection to a subsequent damaging ischemic insult. We established bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) as a preconditioning stimulus to induce early ischemic tolerance (IT) to transient focal cerebral ischemia (induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion, MCAO) in C57Bl6/J mice.
