Dendritic Orientation

Dendritic orientation is the directional arrangement of a neuron’s dendritic branches, a structural feature that shapes how the cell receives and integrates synaptic information. During neuronal development, dendrites extend, branch, and align in relation to neighboring cells, tissue architecture, and incoming axons, positioning synapses across distinct receptive regions. In neuroscience, analyzing dendritic orientation helps link neuronal morphology with connectivity, sensory tuning, and circuit organization. Imaging and quantitative tracing methods can reveal how orientation changes across brain regions, developmental stages, or disease states, providing insight into the cellular mechanisms that establish functional neural networks.

2017

Here, we show how to analyze dendritic routing of Drosophila medulla neurons in columns and layers. The workflow includes a dual-view imaging technique to improve the image quality and computational tools for tracing, registering dendritic arbors to the reference column array and for analyzing the dendritic structures in 3D space.

Oriented Surfaces

A surface is called orientable if a consistent choice of unit normal vector can be made at every point on the surface. A thin soap film stretched across a wire loop provides a familiar example. The film separates the air on one side from the air on the other, so one side can be selected as positive and the opposite side as negative. Once this choice is made, a unit normal vector can be assigned smoothly across the entire surface. At each point on the soap film, a unit normal vector points...
