Drosophila Sensilla

Drosophila sensilla are specialized sensory organs on the fruit fly’s exoskeleton that detect environmental cues and provide a tractable model for studying sensory neuroscience. Each sensillum contains one or more receptor neurons, supporting cells, and a lymph-filled cavity; mechanical, chemical, or thermal stimuli alter receptor activity and generate neural signals transmitted to the central nervous system. Their accessible anatomy, diverse sensory functions, and well-characterized genetic tools allow researchers to link molecules and cellular structures with perception and behavior. Studies of olfactory, gustatory, auditory, and mechanosensory sensilla help clarify how nervous systems encode stimuli and adapt to changing environments.
