Ethanol Withdrawal Test

The ethanol withdrawal test is a behavioral assay used to measure physical and neurological changes that occur when repeated ethanol exposure is reduced or stopped, providing an indicator of alcohol dependence and neural adaptation. After ethanol cessation, compensatory changes in inhibitory and excitatory signaling can produce a state of heightened neuronal activity, expressed through withdrawal behaviors such as tremors, altered motor activity, or seizures. In neuroscience research, the test helps characterize the time course and severity of withdrawal, investigate mechanisms of dependence, and evaluate compounds that may reduce withdrawal-related symptoms or restore neural balance.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Blood collection is a common requirement for research studies that involve mice and rats. The method of blood withdrawal in mice and rats is dependent upon the volume of blood needed, the frequency of the sampling, the health status of the animal to be bled, and the skill level of the technician. All methods discussed-retro-orbital sinus bleeds, initial tail snip bleeds, and intracardiac...

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN The collection of blood from mice and rats for analysis can be done through a variety of methods. Each method of collection has variations in the type of restraint required, the invasiveness of the procedure, and the necessity of a general anesthetic.1Historically, the use of the retro-orbital sinus cavity has been used, but not without debate. The controversy related to the potential tissue...

A method to determine the time course of ethanol concentration in the brains of rats during operant ethanol self-administration is described. Gas chromatography with flame ionization detection is used to quantify ethanol in the dialysate samples, because it has the sensitivity required for the small volumes that are generated.

Withdrawal of a Partner

When a partner withdraws from a partnership, the payment may differ from the partner's capital account balance. Under the bonus method, this difference is treated as a bonus and recorded by adjusting the capital accounts of the remaining partners without revaluing the partnership's assets. If the retiring partner receives more than the capital account balance, the excess is a bonus to the retiring partner. The remaining partners' capital accounts are reduced according to their profit and loss...
