Flexible Probe Implantation

Flexible probe implantation is a neuroscience technique for placing soft, bendable electrode arrays or sensor devices within neural tissue to monitor or modulate brain activity. During implantation, the probe enters the target region and conforms more closely to tissue movement than rigid devices, helping establish stable interfaces for recording electrical signals or delivering stimulation. This approach supports studies of neural circuits, behavior, and neurological disease while enabling longer-term measurements in living organisms. Flexible probes also contribute to the development of brain-computer interfaces and other neurotechnologies designed to improve the compatibility, durability, and information quality of implanted neural devices.

Insertion of flexible neural microelectrode probes is enabled by attaching probes to rigid stiffeners with polyethylene glycol (PEG). A unique assembly process ensures uniform and repeatable attachment. After insertion into tissue, the PEG dissolves and the stiffener is extracted. An in vitro test method evaluates the technique in agarose gel.

Positioning Laser Doppler Probe: A Technique to Implant Probe Over Middle Cerebral Artery for Blood Flow Measurement in Murine Model

2025

This video describes the surgical procedure to immobilize the laser Doppler probe over the murine brain's middle cerebral artery, or MCA. The probe helps to measure the blood flow in the brain's microvasculature by measuring the Doppler shift caused due to the motion of red blood cells within the artery.
