Impactor Tip

An impactor tip is the contact surface of a device that delivers a controlled mechanical force to a target, making it a critical component in experimental injury models. Mounted to an actuator, the tip transfers energy through brief contact, while its geometry, diameter, material, and movement conditions influence tissue displacement, pressure, and the resulting injury pattern. In neuroscience, impactor tips are widely used in controlled cortical impact models of traumatic brain injury to produce graded, reproducible damage. These models support analysis of behavioral and histological outcomes, investigation of secondary brain injury mechanisms, and evaluation of potential therapies.

Generating a Mouse Model of Traumatic Brain Injury Using an Impactor Device

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure for inducing traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a mouse model. An anesthetized mouse with an exposed skull is taken to create an opening in the skull, and then a controlled cortical injury is induced using an impact device. The injury damages the brain tissue, causing impaired cognitive function and motor coordination.

Generating a Traumatic Brain Injury Mouse Model Using an Impactor Probe

This video demonstrates the procedure for inducing an open-skull traumatic brain injury in a mouse by making a midline skull incision, drilling through the skull and removing the bone flap to expose the brain cortex, and applying high pressure to induce trauma. The wound is then sutured to prepare the mouse model for subsequent experiments.

A Contusive Model of Unilateral Cervical Spinal Cord Injury Using the Infinite Horizon Impactor

A reliable and repeatable way to produce a cervical unilateral spinal cord injury using the Infinite Horizon impactor is described. The method takes advantage of a custom designed frame and clamp to stabilize the spine. The standardized procedure and biomechanical injury parameters result in sufficient and sustained injuries.
