Intracellular Electrochemical Cytometry

Intracellular electrochemical cytometry is a single-cell analytical technique that quantifies electroactive molecules within living cells, offering sensitive measurements that complement conventional biochemical assays. During analysis, a microscale electrode enters or contacts an individual cell, and neurotransmitters or other redox-active compounds undergo oxidation or reduction at its surface; the resulting electrical current reflects their amount and release dynamics. In neuroscience, this approach can measure catecholamines and related signaling molecules in individual neurons or secretory vesicles, revealing cell-to-cell differences in neurotransmitter storage, exocytosis, and chemical signaling. Such measurements support research on synaptic communication, neuronal function, and disorders involving dysregulated neurotransmission.

2023

Electrochemical biosensors detect the binding of a target molecule by sensing an oxidation-reduction event. These sensors paved the way for modern biosensing after the invention of the glucose biosensor. This video will introduce electrochemical biosensing, show the workings of the glucose biosensor, and discuss how electrochemical biosensors are used in cancer detection.

2025

This video demonstrates the effect of tobacco product preparations, TPPs, on cytokine production from human peripheral blood mononuclear cells using flow cytometry. Treatment of the cells with TPP downregulates the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which is estimated after lipopolysaccharide stimulation, followed by immunostaining and flow cytometry analysis.
