Matrix Coated Culture

Matrix-coated culture is a cell culture approach in which growth surfaces are treated with extracellular matrix components to support cell attachment, survival, and organization. Matrix proteins such as laminin or collagen adsorb to the substrate and present binding sites that engage cell-surface integrins, activating adhesion and cytoskeletal signaling that can influence neuronal morphology, polarity, and neurite extension. In neuroscience, this method provides a more biologically relevant environment for maintaining primary neurons, neural stem cells, and glial cells, enabling studies of development, connectivity, neurotoxicity, and regeneration while improving the consistency of in vitro experiments.

In this video, glioblastoma and microglia cells are mixed with a polymer matrix solution and transferred to a porous chamber insert where a gel forms, embedding the cells. Microglia stimulate the migration of glioblastoma cells through the porous insert, mimicking tumor cell invasion into surrounding tissue, Cells are then fixed and prepared for further analysis.
