Reverse Inference

Reverse inference is a reasoning strategy that infers a mental process or cognitive state from observed brain activity, making it an important but constrained approach in neuroscience. Researchers typically begin with activation in a brain region or network and work backward to propose the psychological function associated with it, often using knowledge of regional selectivity, task conditions, and prior probabilities. Because most neural areas support multiple processes, activation alone rarely proves a specific mental state; strong conclusions require converging behavioral, anatomical, and experimental evidence. Used carefully, reverse inference helps generate hypotheses about cognition, supports interpretation of neuroimaging data, and clarifies the limits of linking brain activity to psychological functions.

Categories and Inductive Inferences

Source: Laboratories of Nicholaus Noles and Judith Danovitch—University of Louisville It might be possible for the human brain to keep track of each individual person, place, or thing encountered, but that would be a very inefficient use of time and cognitive resources. Instead, humans develop categories. Categories are mental representations of real things that can be used for a variety of purposes. For example, individuals can use the perceptual features of animals to place them into a given...

Theory of Attribution I: Correspondent Inference Theory

2025

Correspondent inference theory, proposed by Jones and Davis in 1965, seeks to explain how individuals infer stable personality traits from observed behaviors. It suggests that people attribute actions to underlying dispositions rather than external circumstances, particularly when the behavior appears intentional and socially significant.Voluntary Behavior and Dispositional AttributionAccording to this theory, individuals are more likely to attribute behavior to personal traits when it appears...

2011

Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty is indicated for the treatment of conditions that cannot be treated with conventional arthroplasty or other procedures. These primarily include degenerative and incapacitating conditions with irreparable rotator cuff and loss of the normal biomechanical coupling of the shoulder.

Creation of Reversible Cholestatic Rat Model

Cholestasis is a clinical condition commonly encountered by both surgeons and gastroenterologists. Creation of a reversible cholestatic rat model can be challenging in view of the smaller size and unique hepatopancreatobiliary anatomy in rats. This video article demonstrates the creation of a reversible cholestatic model.

Diode: Reverse bias

2024

A diode is reverse-biased when the positive terminal of an external voltage source is connected to the n-type material and the negative terminal to the p-type material. This configuration opposes the natural direction of current flow through the diode, effectively increasing the width of the depletion region and the barrier potential. The reverse bias condition produces a minimal leakage current, primarily due to minority charge carriers. This leakage becomes significant when the reverse...
