Stimulus Pair Testing

Stimulus pair testing is a neuroscience method that presents two controlled stimuli in succession to determine how the first influences the brain’s or nervous system’s response to the second. By varying the interval, intensity, or sensory modality between stimuli and comparing paired responses with responses to single stimuli, researchers can measure effects such as facilitation, inhibition, adaptation, and temporal integration. The approach helps characterize synaptic processing, neural circuit excitability, and sensory coding in systems ranging from isolated neurons to human participants. It is used in electrophysiology, neuroimaging, and behavioral experiments to investigate connectivity, plasticity, and the mechanisms underlying perception and response selection.

2012

The application of a classical fear conditioning behavioral paradigm for auditory prosthetic research in rats is described. This paradigm provides a mechanism for identifying both detection of, and discrimination between, distinct acoustic and electrical stimuli using heart-rate as an outcome measure.

Inducing Axonal Varicosities with a Micromechanical Stimulus on Neurons

2025

This video demonstrates the induction of axonal varicosities by applying micromechanical stimulus on neurons. The system comprises a micropipette attached to a syringe containing buffer via tubing. Using a micromanipulator, the micropipette is positioned above the neurons. Fluid pressure is then applied to induce varicosities in axons.

DNA Base Pairing

2020

Erwin Chargaff’s rules on DNA equivalence paved the way for the discovery of base pairing in DNA. Chargaff’s rules state that in a double-stranded DNA molecule, the amount of adenine (A) is equal to the amount of thymine (T); the amount of guanine (G) is equal to the amount of cytosine (C); and the sum of purines, A and G, is equal to the sum of pyrimidines, C and T (i.e., A+G = C+T). Later work by Watson and Crick revealed that in double-stranded DNA, A always forms two hydrogen bonds...
