Strata Radiatum Lacunosum Moleculare

Stratum radiatum and stratum lacunosum-moleculare are interconnected laminae of the hippocampal formation that organize synaptic input onto pyramidal neurons and shape information flow through hippocampal circuits. In area CA1, stratum radiatum contains the apical dendrites of pyramidal cells and receives Schaffer collateral input from CA3, whereas stratum lacunosum-moleculare receives prominent entorhinal cortex input onto distal apical dendrites; local interneurons regulate these signals. Their distinct connectivity and dendritic locations support integration of cortical and hippocampal information, influence spatial and episodic memory processing, and provide anatomical landmarks for studying synaptic plasticity, circuit dysfunction, and hippocampal network activity.

In Vitro Recording of Theta Oscillations in the Mouse Hippocampus

2025

This video demonstrates the recording of rhythmic neuronal network activity, also known as theta oscillations, in an isolated hippocampus. Electrodes are inserted into various layers and spatial positions to detect and analyze theta oscillations. This shows the unique neuronal compositions and the connectivity of the neuronal network across different layers of the hippocampus.

Making a Geologic Cross Section

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder Geologic maps were first made and utilized in Europe, in the mid-to-late 18th century. Ever since, they have been an important part of geological investigations all around the world that strive to understand rock distributions on the surface of the earth, in the subsurface, and their modification through time. A modern geologic map is a data-rich representation of rocks and rock-structures in a two-dimensional plan view. The...

Measurement of Evoked Potassium Ion Concentration Dynamics in Coronal Hippocampal Slices

2025

The video demonstrates evoked potassium ion concentration dynamics on electrical stimulation of mouse coronal hippocampal brain slices. A bipolar stimulating electrode is inserted into the stratum radiatum of the CA3 region in the hippocampus, and a potassium-ion selective electrode is placed in the CA1 stratum radiatum. The electrical stimulation causes an action potential, resulting in potassium ion release. Finally, the lack of evoked potassium ion response in the presence of an inhibitory...

Recording CA3-CA1 Synaptic Responses in a Rat Hippocampal Slice

2025

This video demonstrates a method to record CA3-CA1 synaptic responses in a rat hippocampal slice. It outlines the steps involved in placing the stimulating and recording electrodes on the hippocampal slice and measuring the field excitatory postsynaptic potential (fEPSP) to assess synaptic response strength.

An Overview of Alkenone Biomarker Analysis for Paleothermometry

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst Throughout this series of videos, natural samples were extracted and purified in search of organic compounds, called biomarkers, that can relate information on climates and environments of the past. One of the samples analyzed was sediment. Sediments accumulate over geologic time in basins, depressions in the Earth into which sediment flows through the action of fluid (water or air), movement, and gravity. Two main types...
